Common Fence Repairs and Issues
#1- Broken fence posts (fence has fallen over)
This is by far the most common issue with fences in New Bern, and it is caused by moisture damage to the wood. Rain and other moisture can get trapped around the base of the fence post.causing the wood to rot over time. As this happens the post get weaker over time and eventually break. After a certain point, a gust of wind will knock it right over. With the high winds from tropical storms and hurricanes we get in New Bern this happens often.
There are a couple of ways to repair this. You can have me dig out the old post and setting a new one in concrete. Then rebuild the section of fence that blew over.
The second way to repair a broken fence post is with a repair bracket. This works surprisingly well and is significantly less expensive. This is a great way to save money and can last just as long as a new post.
#2-The fence is unstable ( it moves when you push on it)
If your fence moves more than one or two inches when you push on it a little bit. It's most likely the fence post is rotted and no longer supporting the fence. This is essentially the same problem as a broken fence post; your fence just hasn't blown over because the horizontal rails support it.
In some rare cases, the fence post isn't broken, and the concrete that the post sits in is loose in the ground. But more often than not Its a broken fence post, and it will need to be repaired or replaced.
#3- broken, missing,or loose pickets(fence boards)
This is by far the most common issue that I run into. This is a pretty straightforward repair and you are likely to be able to complete this repair on your own.
Once you have the proper materials this repair can be done fairly quickly. Go to the local home improvement store and pick up a few fence boards. You'll need to pick up some screws or nails ( I prefer screws) and attach the new fence boards. You'll need a hammer, pry bar, a cordless drill, and maybe a saw and a shovel. Easy!
Ensure you get the correct wood (cedar or redwood) and make sure you get the right width 4 or 6 inch pickets. after that cut to the proper height and install.
You can do this repair yourself or go to the contact page, request a quote, and I'll be happy to help you.
#4- The gate is sagging and won't latch
Yup, we've all seen this one many, many times. As fences are exposed to harsh weather and changing seasons they move around a lot. However sometimes they are built incorrectly to begin with. Either way, sagging gates are a common issue you don't have to live with. Most of the time reinforcing the gate with a cross member and some screws will solve the issue Occasionally, however, the gate may need to be rebuilt to function and latch properly.
